What are the best tires ?

Post by lester12483 » Apr 04 2017 6:10pm

I'm wondering what you are all using for tires? What is the best 26 inch tire for a front hub motor?

Post a link to them if you can.

Thanks.

That is the worst phrased question ever. Most durable, most grippy on pavement, most grippy on hardpack dirt, most grippy in soft loam or mud, sand, which one carries the most weight which one weighs the least...

You get the idea. Now my guess is you just want a good all around tire. The best way to get this is to just go to your local bike shop and ask, not post on an internet forum where 50 people will give you 50 different ideas.

I just use standard Kevlar tires. I'm wondering if there is anything better and more durable.

Worst answer ever too.
What do you consider to be "standard Kevlar tires"?
What size do you use?
The Forte Gothams are as good as any flat resistant tire and less expensive. Their extra thick tubes are good too
Avail. on Amazon.

I would guess that a tire on a front hub bike might experience more flats than normal, since the added weight would have a tendency to push the tire onto sharp FOD, instead of rolling over it. The resident bicycle mechanic is Chalo, and he recommended a Panaracer RiBiMo, but unfortunately...at the time that I bought one, the fattest version was 2.0-inch. So far, no flats yet...and seems to be wearing well. They have a thinner than average sidewall to help the carcass remain supple and responsive, to soften the ride, while still having a tough tread.

I am not experienced enough to rate the road-grip compared to another tire. The CST Cyclops in 2.4-inch seems to be popular as a cheap tire ($15-ish).

Thanks Spinning.

I'm working on a new build and want to use the best 26 inch tire on the market.

ok 26 inch you should look at wired or dual (2) ply tyres

dual ply tyres : https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&ei= ... es&*&spf=1

wired : https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&ei= ... &*&spf=428

sizes(1.25 to 2.70) are up to you and your personal preference

I use http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/schw ... %7C76469UK

and also use http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/schw ... %7C76655UK

but use off road Maxxis Minion DHF 2Ply

Yet another "tire" thread, and in the photos and video section?

Maybe better merged with whatever the last "tire" thread was, or one of these others?

Bicycle tires are an overpriced joke compared to motorcycle or moped tires.

If its a DD (=heavy) front hub, I would be trying to maximise the pneumatic shock absorbtion - nice and fat.

the word "rim" has not been mentioned once.. tire choice is highly dependent on rim width. what is your rim width lester?

I guess that makes DOT tires an overweight, inefficient, shoddy and imbalanced joke.

I remember paying $150 each and more for moto tires, by the way. My favorite bicycle tires cost $30 retail and last a whole lot more miles.

Schwalbe Crazy Bob & Big Apple
Maxxis Hookworm
Schwalbe Marathon Supreme and the Avvocet Fas Grip City K - Both good for flat protection compared to hookworm

That's all good background information, and I think all the models mentioned are still available.

There's a strong bias towards pavement-oriented tires in those links, which is consistent with my strong bias towards riding on pavement.

It's true I favor wheels that are round, strong, and lightweight; that don't cost too much and can be repaired. If I didn't care about these qualities, then I might prefer one-piece wheels.

Chalo - How long do your tires last, distance wise?

Depends on the tires. I rarely use up the tread thickness of my tires anymore; usually I ditch them because the sidewalls have failed or are looking risky, or else because I got a nasty cut through the casing that I don't want to patch with a boot. Some tires, like RiBMo, I have yet to wear out a single one of. I've had a number of them for years, and I still have all of them.

I'd say 3000 to 5000 miles is typical before I have to replace a tire for one reason or another. Some (e.g. Panaracer Tserv) have failed way earlier than that and others (e.g. Schwalbe Big Apple) have served much longer.

These examples relate to pedal only bikes with gross weights close to 400 pounds. I have not yet kept a single e-bike around long enough to wear out a set of tires, though my last pusher trailer significantly wore the tread of its 16 inch tire in just a couple hundred miles-- I think mostly because it skidded and bounced a lot.

Best 26" tire IMO is the Schwalbe Super Moto-X...it is available in a 26x2.4". If you can run it, I like the 27.5x2.8" even better.

A lot depends on how and where you are going to ride. When I say best, my riding conditions and use are cruising around and occasionally riding like a hooligan on pavement :D .

Here is a link to them: https://www.schwalbetires.com/bike_tire ... per-moto-x

I can tell you what NOT to use...the Vee Tire Co Apache Fatty Slick.

The spec says a durometer of 57 and the one I received was 72-73...which means the rubber is very hard.

We won't go in to the resulting accident :D .

IMO you should stick with Schwalbe or Maxxis....the Schwalbe Super Moto-X and Maxxis Hookworm both work good on harder/smoother surfaces.
