500W motor runs better with 800W controller?

Post by Allex » Jul 21 2012 5:18pm

Hello,
I am about to buy a brushless hub motor rated for 36V500W and the seller recommended a 800W controller for that.
Problem is that the controller will not fit in to my chassis, but a 500W will.

What is the real difference here, will the motor be slower, less powerful with 500W controller and in this case maybe I should somehow make room for the 800W?
My source is LiPo 37V

yes, yes

you have 8S of lipo now? 16-18S will fit under a 75Vmosfet on the output so you could increase voltage for it too with a change in the input capacitors to 100V from 63V.

so make the big one fit is the best long term option for cheap upgrade, imo. you can open it later and decide what you wanna do then.

I have 10s and don't have any plans on upgrading the voltage, I don't need more speed, but torque is always a welcome.
Right now I have a brushed 800W motor, chain drive with a 800W Controller for it. Just a bit worried that if I switch to this brushless 500W hub motor with 500W controller I will notice a power drop? Or maybe the hub motor is mor efficient and I will have equal performance?

It's not alot of difference but it will have more puch. If the 800W has a legal speed cap it's not likely to be faster.
Give me nuclear batteries I say!!
