What Lipo Bulk Charger?

Post by mybike » Feb 14 2015 10:52pm

I want to get a bulk charger. I am looking at the one from BMSBattery.com and my lipo pack is 5cell 5mah 18.5v each pack total 3 packs in series giving me 55.5v and I have another 3 in series that I put in parallel for more distance. When they are charged they read 62-63v in series.

Charger Link:-
https://bmsbattery.com/ebike-charger-ev ... arger.html

1. Will this charger work to charge my 55.5v lipo connected in series?
2. Also is the cuzomation below correct for what I need as I need to input that at there website please help for better correct vaues?

Battery Type: Li-Ion ? (or do I put Lipo or LiFePO4 )
Calls In Series: 15 cells ?
AC Plug Type: 3 Pin (UK)
DC Connector Type: Anderson Powerpole connectors
Charge Voltage (Typical Value): 4.1v ? (or do i put 4.2v)
Charge Current: 5Amps ?

Yes it will work. BUT
How are you charging now?
When I ordered mine I put the max voltage per whole pack not the cell voltage.
Even after you get it, make sure it is set to what you want.
You still need to watch the cell voltage as it charges for a while and will need to balance once in a while.
I always use a watt/volt meter in the charge line. I think I have 6 different ones now and I still don't trust them as much as I do a BMS or a RC charger.

I charge them in parallel using parallel bored and imax charger in Lilo mode.

So I will change to = Charge Voltage (Typical Value): 60v (thats 4.0v each cell) Instead of 61.5v that be 4.1v each cell. Setting that at 60v may balance out better as a thought.?

Also any BMS from BMSBattery that will work with my set up?

I have liked charging to 4.15v per cell with a bulk charger. So for your 15s, 62.25v. or just 62v. Charging to 4v just costs way too much capacity for me. Sometimes I charge to 4.1v, when I know the ride I plan on won't take much capacity.

This gives me some wiggle room at the top of charge, a really out of balance cell could be .1v high, and still stay below 4.25v when I charge to 4.15v

When you do balance, balance at 4.2v to get the most accurate top balance.

It should be possible to diddle the output voltage to whatever you want once you get it.

So to be clear dogman dan I put the charge Voltage (Typical Value) at 62.25v?
Is the charger accurately set by BMSBattery do you know when I get the charger in the post if I put 62.25v value?

There should be a tiny adjustable pot very close to where the DC output wires solder to the board. Adjusting that will fine tune your output voltage.

After some use, I find chargers may drift, usually to a lower voltage output, so check once in a while and be sure you have the output you want.

EM3ev has a charger with a three way switch, that allows you to dial in three voltages. I have mine set to 4.15v, 4.1v, and the third is half charged. Handy thing.

But what I want now, is Grins new charger, the satiator.

If you're going to bulk charge, I'd also get 3 battery medics to use while charging. Either in balance mode or discharge mode set to 4.1-4.2V.

I have already ordered the 400w charger from bmsbattery on sunday 16/2/2015 dogman dan. Its good news that they have a pot to adjust the voltages. I don’t know how long it will take to come via ParcelForce for UK.

This is what i put in the cuzomation box.
Battery Type: Li-Ion
Calls In Series: 15 cells
AC Plug Type: 3 Pin (UK)
DC Connector Type: Anderson Powerpole connectors
Charge Voltage (Typical Value): 62.25v
Charge Current: 5Amps

Yes dogman dan that Grins new charger, the satiator looks very interesting :!:

The battery medics is a good idea wesnewell I never thought of that so I will purchase those as well from hobbyking thanks.

I have first 3 blocks in series and another 3 blocks in series then parallel to the first 3 blocks so total of 6 Lipo Packs. Also I would be buying 3 more Lipos from hobbyking (UK) soon to add in parallel making total 9 Lipo packs.

Questions
1. Would I need medic for each pack or 3 for the first block of series be OK?
2. Is it good to put a watt meter (GT Meter) between the charger and lipos as its charging or the medic alone be fine?

Parallel the balance leads and you only need 3 medics for the whole pack.

I have a couple of these.

If you mean use 2 or moreon the same battery for discharging, it should work ok. Would bleed of excess voltages faster. I doubt it would work well for balancing though.

but using one at a time would balance well right?
Do you recommend this one?
Have you used them for a while?
Are they accurate?

O I get it now.
No I was talking about the charger.
On that note has it been confirmed that the charger has an adjustable pot?

I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to charge a home made 15s battery pack.
Made from used lappy cells.

It'll be 40ah so 800w will still be less than .5c
Actually it should be .3174c

I'm also looking at bulk charging a 72V lipo pack that will be on my bike with the Mxus.
This pack will also be at least 40ah.
I'm thinking about using 5 of these http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewto ... 14&t=40167 and a 600w 12v meanwell on top to give me 18s lipo bulk charger at 40 amps!
That's 3kw of charging power and still only 1c. 8)

Was thinking of getting 3 of these and join in series variable volts and current combined 90 volt at 5 amps

why not just get a regular charger? do you know if the power supplies can be connected in series?

you should charge to full voltage to reduce the heating of the cell on discharge. charging to 90% increases the amount of heat produced in the battery cell on discharge compared to a fully charged cell.

that is why all batteries used in laptops and other devices are charged to 4.20V/cell.

My experience has been that the cells get hot at the end of a deep discharge, if you pull hard amps at that point. But if your ride pattern never gets to the last 20%, there will be less of that heating. Slow to a creep at the end of a long ride, to help your battery out if you are sucking out that last few wh.

For sure, if you must discharge 100% to get there, charging to the very top is the thing to do. Better to leave 10% at the bottom, than to leave 10% on the table from the start. Even better, to add 25% to your battery capacity rather than ride a battery to deep discharge on a daily commute.

I have one now but I need another one to sell with the bike and our Aussie dollar is crap at the moment :x
