If you buy sketchy super crappy allibaba/fleabay lipo, then damage it from over discharge a month earlier, and then go for a ride with a known damaged pack and drain it till a cell reverses and catches fire, how does it merit donations?

Just because it may be his fault doesn't mean it doesn't suck. Plenty of people here have helped me out when I've done stupid stuff and been with out a bike. Lyens been good to me at least. I have no problem with doing what I can. Even if it's only enough to buy a 6 pack.

I agree, he has helped me out enough with my now twice exploded 18-Fet controller. I have no problem shooting him some cash.

Hi Katou,

I was testing a sensorless controller at 100.8v on that day. I managed to go over 21mile using the same battery pack on Chroot's ebike. I have under-estimated the battery usage due to higher speed and wind resistance than at 44.4v even at less distance. That was the root cause for over discharged.

I will try to bring a bottle water from now on just in case.

Regards,
Lyen

Or you could simply buy decent quality lipo, charge and discharge them within their limits
and not ever worry about a fire happening. I'm a 'Lyen fan' myself but i'm with Luke
on this one, sorry... You should have, you DO know alot better than this Edward! very surprised
to see you do this i must say!

Before I make this obnoxious comment, let me first say that I think Lyen is the man, and I'm super bummed about his battery!

But water on a lithium fire?! I probably wouldn't do it....

I also plan donate some money for Lyen when I have enough funds cuz I am in process moving in new place that involve lot money down security deposit, 1st and last month rent.

I am looking forward ride together with Edward Lyen and maybe Ilia Brouk again. 8)

Better off, Use Class D extinguisher should be used to quench the LiPo fire.

Firstly, Edward I'm glad you didn't get hurt.

Second, Everytime I read or see batteries in a backpack I worry.
Alot of energy mounted on a persons back that can cause some serious injury.

Third, Some of the packs I have seen are free to move around, possibly damaging cells and or wiring,
leading to shorting, puffing, burning.

Possibly a timely warning to backpack batteries users,
please if your going to use a backpack to carry your batteries
then take extra care and encase them in something solid to protect the batteries and wiring (and yourself).

Lyen is the man, and I'll continue to support him with purchases for sure.

Too bad about that fire, it goes to show that the casual attitude we are developing may be a hazard. I started out pretty carefull with lipo, then when nothing bad happedned, let things slide a bit. Mixing up charged ones with discharged ones, I rode off for a quick ride with two charged and one discharged packs.

Fortunately I smelled something when I retruned home, and opening a battery bag, found a puffer fish sized pack in there. It was VERY HOT, but didn't actually flame. You guessed it, I was going for just a short ride, so had no lv warnings, no voltmeter, nada. I'd have bee ok had I simply verified the charge before riding off.

Hk Turnigy pack, so no flames. But it was sure trying to flame.

That's why I am strong caution everyone who owned LiPo and encourage get LVC boards from Gary or Geoff.

LVC boards = 100% guaranteed stop you put the LiPo into death and hazard zone.

I think that's a pretty far fechted comment, there are no guarantees in life and accidents happen, it's a risk we take with any battery chemistry/pack.. it's good to minimize the risk but even BMS's fail and sometimes cause an accident themselves !!.

Oh I agree, Electronics components can be failure such BMS or LVC boards. *knock the wood* Hope it doesn't fails on my Geoff LVC boards on my LiPo batteries.

Yesterday, I went full WOT (41mph) to work and back home, In the middle way to my home and my LiPo batteries sudden dropped voltage to the bottom so fast. The Geoff's LVC boards saved my LiPo into the death zone.

If it works for you, yes it will work however if you are in loud area couldn't hear the buzz. Therefore byebye LiPo unless you really pay attention how much left in LiPo.

You see I am deaf person and That's why I went LVC boards saved my butt few times. :)

Bummer about the lipo's. As a lipo user myself, I keep an eye on how much mah I consume on my commute with my logger. Just bought and ESC and some misc parts from Lyen to help recoup some of his lost.

I've vented A123's and puffed up some Turnigy Life packs before, by having that one cell that didn't perform as the others.

The higher 'C' rate Turnigy and Zippys yes, 20-25C and upwards, higher 'C' rate
packs are made from higher quality cells.

cool,
if everyone who has had good experience with Edward could contribute half the price of 22v5ah turnigy or zippy pack or so, i am sure there are enough ES members here to cover the cost of a nice juicy battery pack!

I've got a dodgy cell in one of my 8 cell 5.8 ah Turnigy 25 to 35c packs, this cell charges much faster than the others and discharges much quicker as well. I'm terrified of it catching fire so have the cell log 8's hooked up to it permanantly when I ride.

Sorry about the fire, no way I would risk lipo in a backpack, chemical burns to your body would not be nice.

yep it seems like one of the cells lost some of its capacity. i think it is normal if it only has half of the capacity of others.. I have similar situation in one of my packs.
