It’s time for a change of strategy in the moderation, don’t you agree?
I agree, the value of ES is separating truth from opinion and combating misinformation with knowledge sharing and peer review. Mods, please eliminate forum censoring that retains misinformation in response to individuals with a noisy victim mentality.

The resource that is ES is degraded every time discourse is deleted. Intelligent and talented people take the time to share information and that precious effort must not be be wasted.

Mods, please ensure future moderation values accuracy, discourse and knowledge sharing before personal opinion and subjective charter assessment. Repeat offenders deserve no leniency irrespective of their content contribution. :kff:

I am in no position to promise anything right now, just know that i am silently agreeing with most of you, and am touched that a bunch of people still care about this place after all these years.

keep the feedback coming, please.

Exactly, and I think it should start with a forced change in that name which in and of itself is problematic as evidenced from the very beginning a distinct lack of the true gurus of the forum ever participating in his threads despite having interesting topics or content. Though I'm certainly no guru, I was one who for quite a few months never took a look at threads simply because of the name of the OP. The lack of participation in his threads was back before whatever switch flipped in his head to make any contrary POV or opinion cause a psychotic break involving yelling and name calling while at the same time whining about being attacked.

FWIW, I too have plenty of similar harassing and abusive PM's I could share.

I'm glad you noticed the thread Larsb. There are a few others who've been outright attacked by ElectricTrump who I hope stop by as well.

There has been a rise in pointless sexual based threads being started, it is as if someone has took a problem to heart and started to spam the site, to me this is showing just how much of a child this person is to ruin a experience for everyone just becuase they made themselfs look immature and stupid, I'm no Einstein but I can control my tongue seems like some not only can't do that but also carry a huge chip all over thinking it makes them better than the rest when we all nw that is wrong it's a weakness that makes people act out of rage when the cool calm and collective just deal with what's on the plate and if proven wrong learn from it to become more complete not throw toys out of the pram.

Nah, you're not missing anything.

I doubt a board member is doing it. Those pop up periodically and in bunches, that's the way such spammers are. Too many out there to doubt they can keep finding ES.

Much the same as hostile new posters. Not that it's never an existing poster with a new name, but there's always plenty more where they came from.

Endless Sphere has been doing good keeping the spam bots at bay, though I have seen a few have slipped through the cracks, but thats why there is a report button.

if you quote spam, you're just spreading it, making it harder for the mods to remove.

why don't you try using the report button instead, looks like an exclamation point.

then you are helping with the problem instead of making it worse.

Yes! To all members, the report button flags the post, making it fast and easy to find.

Even if a report turns out to not be spam, it is an easy matter to clear the report.

Let me throw in my complete agreement with the sentiment from John, larsb and others. I've attempted to not let this get under my skin, but as another example of a good thread gone bad - My Mobipus controller discussion completely turned to crap and was unceremoniously locked without comment over a year ago, never to re-open. Same primary offender. Same constant posting as an absolute authority (in line with the username).

Generally his posts contain more than their share of half truths, common misconceptions or misguided/dangerous opinions, however mixed in with this is a genuine enthusiasm and a willingness to take things apart, buy unproven products and provide feedback for the communities benefit. For that reason I haven't escalated, as on reflection I thought perhaps the good outweighed the bad. In recent history that balance has swung hard towards the crazy end of the spectrum, resulting in gigantic red bold lettered spam containing the equivalent of 'NANANA I CAN'T HEAR YOU' in reply to civil responses and suggestions from well respected forum members - though doubtless this has been scrubbed from the record. From the other posters here, I now see that perhaps a lot was going on behind the scenes..

There is a wealth of information on these boards and one of the defining qualities of the discourse was the willingness of SMEs to call out misinformation and correct error where observed. Sometimes this lead to lively discussion - not a problem in of itself - but generally it was towards the benefit of us all, not the degradation of the individual. I feel perhaps any lively discussion held today would be met with 'THIS IS A SAFE SPACE' and a timeout, followed quickly by the departure of the knowledge and accumulated experience held by the poster.

I am not a fan *at all* of the white-washing, eradication or combination of thread content which renders the original conversation thread difficult to follow. If duplicate threads are created and conversation has progressed in both and weighed against benefit to the community you think a singular conversation would be better, then lock one with a link to the other similar topic along with your rationale. If people post offensive content or outright personal attacks, remove or edit the offending material and post an update to the thread with actions taken and reasoning. Transparency is important. Transparency may well exist, in the private moderator spaces and obscured threads but it's not real to the average forum user.

There's a significant amount of people like myself that read a great deal, learn a great deal and perhaps post relatively little - but think a great deal about when we post. It doesn't take a lot of BS for me to not post as I frankly have things I probably should be doing instead (like right now when I should be writing cloud infrastructure documentation). Please don't filter out the silent masses by pandering to vocal agitators. Soon you'll just have agitation.

Nice post Ohbse. I appreciate your input and understand completely how much time is invested in a post like that. I realize that I'm not nearly as tactful, and though I may wade into something to mix it up, other times I'll take a long time formulating a post and just decide to bite my tongue and delete instead of Submit.

BTW I see that ElectricTrump's thread is live again, yet still has an inappropriate thread title since the motor in question is definitely not a SurRon motor, but an aftermarket motor produced and sold by someone selling other aftermarket parts. He was already called on that by someone who appeared to actually work for SurRon, but that was part of the info lost in the process of censoring that prompted this thread.

This isn't an issue where ignoring it in hopes that it will go away is going to work. wturber may want to just give the guy a pass and a few others want it to just die down, but enough of us realize that some real action is required. I still believe that a forced name change may get the message across. It's offensive anyway, and I'm not the only one to take offense to it.

ElectricGod removed some of his own posts. He's allowed to do that. Perhaps after some reflection he felt that maybe he had gone too far, even by his own standards. Is that white-washing?

I removed quite a few posts that were off topic (I believe the topics were the Revolt motors, and the Sur-Ron motor?). If two people are arguing, the majority of the flame posts are typically off-topic. That is not censoring.

Gentlemen, I would like to request that you please use the blocking feature. That way, you'll never have to see the posts of someone that you disagree with (whether someone is right or wrong is completely irrelevant to moderation). The liberal use of the thread-locking feature is because...if a fast-growing flame-fest is not temporarily stopped, it will get quite long with personal attacks mixed with useful technical information. Then hopefully, two or three mods will eventually find time to scan the argument. That can take a long time.

The moderators are attempting to find some consensus, rather than one moderator being tasked with weeding-out what should be done with each new variation of a flame-war. Of course, there are fewer moderators each year, and the existing moderators are very busy in their own lives (me included).

Feel free to continue pointing out those places where the moderators could improve, and also where moderation mistakes have been made. And trust me, mistakes will be made. I am flattered by any suggestion that I obviously must be reading every post, and that my moderation judgement is so good, therefore...any mistake I make must obviously be malicious.

I barely have time to read the flagged posts about Ukranian generic Viagra.

These threads were not censored (although everyone is free to claim they were, as free speech). Personal attacks were removed, and technical posts remain (it's not a perfect science, mistakes will be made). It's unfortunate that some technical posts have a personal attack mixed into it. That was a clever trick. If I remove just the personal attack, I have "altered" a post. I actually did that a few times, and it was a failed experiment. I added [OT portion removed my moderator], and my name was in the logs as the person who did it.

Of course, that now means that...if you post "watts are volts times amps, and your mother was a hamster", I don't have the option of just removing the hamster part. Now that I think about it, it's a slippery slope, and it is best that moderators not do that. But with one hand tied behind my back, the entire post (with an OT portion) will now be deleted, including the W=VxA part. I hoped that cutting out an OT sentence would help the posts, but it was a bad idea.

I will try to do better.

IMO, the mods do an excellent job. Of course it's expected that someone will get his tit in a wringer on occasion; can't stop that and doesn't really matter. My only complaint is mod(s) who constantly harp on a producer they don't like. Seems like anti-shilling to me.

What these tools don't realize is I'm nuts and to my face Its gonna become messy fast I will help those in need and go the extra mile but pencil pushing telephone tuff guys piss me off and one ever show themselfs they will learn but they won't because they are fairy farts.

The worst mistake a moderator can make is discuss his actions on the open forum. It never works out and seems to empower the troublemakers. If communication with the participants is necessary, it's best to do it via PMs.

As to the poster in question, I question his judgment on calling himself 'godlike'. John's renaming him 'ElectricTrump cracks me up.

When you get down to it, the only Gods on a forum are the Administrators who pick and are responsible for the mods actions. So I suggest that all you dillweeds (and you know who you are) watch out for those lighting bolts from above.

BTW. dillweed is what turns a perfectly good cucumber sour. 🥒

Luckily I dont come across no/much/any drama, but find it amusing when I do read it.
Blocking people, is weak, a mental iggy is sufficient, but I can see how floods or frequent posts can be irritating to come across in a thread thats interesting.

I don't know enough about what he posted to have an opinion on his posts. But if they were anything like the PMs from him that I saw others post, I'd be very judgmental in the negative. The only thing I gave the guy a pass on was his choice of name. And even then, I wasn't actually giving him a pass. He didn't need one since his choice of names doesn't break any forum rules that I could find. I was just pointing that out.

And I agree that ignoring stuff won't make it go away on the forum. That's what reporting to mods is for. They can make it go away if it breaks the rules. If it doesn't break the rules but annoys the crap out of me, well that's when ignoring works a treat.

Update on my Dirt Dog problem. Using it to clean 30' x 40' shop. I leave Dirt Dog to clean shop. I go home. Next morning shop is not clean. Uh-oh + 10 beep error message. Happens about 8 out of 10 times.

Was planning on doing modification as described in this post. Bought a new Dirt Dog so I would have a new clean one to work on. Tested new one. It works! No error messages. Suspect that IRobot people changed the software? Girls who answer complaints don't have a clue.

Here are serial numbers:
060808 Old
070516 New
Suspect there's dates in them numbers? See 06 and 07? Serial number is under battery.

The old one works fine in a small area.

Hello Marty,

I edited your serial #'s to leave out un-needed info. I only exposed manufacture date, it only tells you when the robot was made. These dates do NOT indicate firmware date. There is another method for that.
Now I have no record of the serial number of my Dirt Dog manufactured in 2006. I am angry that that stupid THX-1138 Robot Masterbater changed my numbers. Look at THX-1138 Robot Master's picture.

I should have complained but I didn't.
Update Dirt Dog think it is the 2007 one? Is still doing a great job of cleaning the shop.
