Re: Ideas for replacing lead acid with 18650 battery bank ?

I ran that (common one would think - why use anachronistic cells in car batteries?) query by a a tech i know, & he said "fine, but u need a new $800 dollar alternator", or some such.

not sure i trust the advice, but there it is.

If its a DD (=heavy) front hub, I would be trying to maximise the pneumatic shock absorbtion - nice and fat.

craigS "I've convinced myself that you'd like the max charge rate of the lipo to be close to the max discharge rate of the bulk pack. That way you hit both limits at the same time." Perhaps, as I suggested, this is an example of how each (or one) of the batteries having a dedicated cheap controller,...

Re: Any interest in disc brake mounted sprockets?

A holy idea (it probably has holes in it) is a simple way of getting a rear disc brake equipped trike electrified.

Maybe hunt down manufacturers / retailers of such trikes for them to offer as an option or to promote the sprockets via them?

Re: Hybrid lipo/18650 pack, different capacity ?

OK, so manifestly too messy for consumers. But it has intriguing mass appeal. batteries are evS weak spot. various chemistries have strengths and weaknesses. Logically, big improvements to the weakness can be made by picking the best chemistry (or combined) for the job. What is needed (& may exist),...

Re: Hybrid lipo/18650 pack, different capacity ?

So this is my first post and I'm resurrecting a thread so apologies for that. I've been thinking about this and it seems there's a consideration that I have not seen anyone comment on yet. Let's say you have the example given here of two packs with a 10:1 ratio of capacity and a 2:1 ratio of ESR. L...

Re: Lipos a good option for high performance small pack?

I would make 4p then, that is a big battery to put on the front already. Even then, I would have prefered using higher Ah bricks and make only 1p. The idea is that less connections are better, and series are better than parallel. One series of high Ah is better than parallel many series of smaller ...

Re: 2 Speed Xiongda hubmotor

And may i add a query:

Re adding torque to the above initial DD drive, would there have been electric/electronic solutions such as sine wave controller etc.?

are there ways of fine tuning the magnetic pulses to good effect?

Re: 2 Speed Xiongda hubmotor

Interesting. At what voltage & current? Luna claims 50 Nm (I assume at 52V/20A) but they also claim that the windings were custom designed to handle a 52V battery. If the 2-speed hub tops out at around 15 mph, that's like 1st gear in a GNG mid drive setup, which has quite a bit of hill climbing abi...

Re: 2 Speed Xiongda hubmotor

OR:

If traction is the worry, maybe simply a second hub motor on front of bike?

Leaning forward during the climb should shift more weight frontwards to improve front grip.

Similarly, some battery e.g. weight moved forward to front racks would nelp.

Re: 2 Speed Xiongda hubmotor

Dunno, just sayin, but a simple good starting point for the chap w/ trailer & 400lb gvm would be a hanging scale like for weighing trophy fish.

e.g. how many kg of force is the weight on a 20 degree slope. I imagine that can be converted to torque required.

Re: 2 Speed Xiongda hubmotor

If the 2-speed hub tops out at around 15 mph, that's like 1st gear in a GNG mid drive setup, which has quite a bit of hill climbing ability. I was actually thinking of putting 2 of those on my trailer (one on each side). I wonder if I would run out of traction with a 100 lb load. Maybe I should use...

As an off the wall noob idea, why not 2WD dual 24v ~hub motors, running on a 22v lipo hobby pack each. e.g. 20ah: https://hobbyking.com/en_us/multistar-high-capacity-6s-20000mah-multi-rotor-lipo-pack.html (2.5kg (light enuff for a front luggage rack), 10C) No balancing. Re: Lipos a good option for high performance small pack?

Lipo is a funny topic. Lipo tragics seem zealously evangelical about them, and equally foreboding. I still dont get why, like other cells, it isnt the norm to just by factory packs of them like - 48v 10ah, with bms & charger. There are some apps in which short life would be well worth fast charging....

A; simple, easier & I hope fresh way for a ~self propelled mower? Its not for all, but its cheap & one less fancy ice device in the shed. Seems to me we are drowning in them. We do have 220v here in oz tho - so sub 3kw (~15 amp) apps are ok as electric. Something that many here in the states fail to realize, is as you noted,.... interesting 2016 link, hard to categorise, china EV cells

There seems a good chance china will dominate making and using EVs globally. It seems the govt has mandated limn over lifepo4 for evs. (stupid, let the market decide) it seems industry there prefer pouch cells (as do I) over tesslaS etc. preferred cannister cell approach.
