Re: Lightweight City Hub Conversion shopping list

If getting started after a lot of stops is an issue, then you need either a throttle or a torque sensing system that starts with little pressure on the pedal, and no crank revolution required. The throttle would likely be safer in city riding. I first got into E-bikes because of a bad knee, and for ...

Re: Wheelies

I have never done any real wheelies on anything, despite having ridden dirt bikes while a teen. I've lofted the front wheel a few inches to maybe a foot to get over obstacles, but actual, sustainable wheelies? Nope. Oddly, though, I've had dreams of riding effortless wheelies for decades. Flying dre...

Re: What could I do with these 2 scoots?

The Ecoped isn't too bad looking, and with 18" tires it should handle pretty well. Better batteries and controller may well be all it needs to become "good." But then I've never really seen the point of the other kind of scooter...

Looking at that motor I'd be concerned about rust and corrosion in the connections, at the very least.

Re: Is It OK To Leave The Bike Outside In Winter?

Here the winters are very cold. I don’t like my bikes parked outside. They are in a garage heated about 10C, so I always start a ride in comfortable temp zone. I am lucky to have a garage at both ends of my commute, making bikers life much better when the weather is bad. I heat my garage to about 4...

Re: Can't Get #@!!@ Tire On Rim

I’ve had same issue with impossible tires, that time due to low diameter. I could eventually force it on. If the rim is ok in size then i’d scrap the tyre. I didn’t and later failed to fix my flat in the middle of a 3 hour road bike session. Walking in bike shoes that far isn’t so nice :D As soon a...

Re: Is It OK To Leave The Bike Outside In Winter?

Just to clarify because of the wording of the title: leaving a bike outdoors, even with the battery removed, is bad - it will rust and the plastic will deteriorate. A garage or shed, even an unheated one, is a large step up from that.

Re: Can't Get #@!!@ Tire On Rim

I can get a radius for the wheel more easily than a diameter because of the axle. That's maybe a hair over 11". My guess at this point is that I have a rim on the large side of normal, and a tire or two on the small side - with one tire that might fit but would be too narrow and slippery for the bike.

Re: Can't Get #@!!@ Tire On Rim

Can anyone suggest really great tire levers? I was using a pair of cheap plastic ones. They helped, but not enough. Re: Can't Get #@!!@ Tire On Rim

Few years ago I have had a Schwaalbe tire that wouldn’t fit the rim. It was a Bloody Mary 26’’. Just to make sure, I did compare this tire with another Bloody Mary when I had a chance to have another one in my shop. The first was defective, smaller than the other 26’’ despite having exactly the sam...

Re: Can't Get #@!!@ Tire On Rim

No markings on the rim other than a 'QC Rim" sticker. The rim tape sticker actually says "27.5 x 20." Also, the box it came in measures exactly 24" square. I will take pictures of the new tire tonight, so I can try to read the tiny markings.

Re: Can't Get #@!!@ Tire On Rim

I already measured the circumference, guys, with a nice flexible length of small diameter rope. IIRC I got 71" after subtracting half an inch for what I think is 1/4" rope. That yielded the 22.6 diameter. As already noted, that doesn't indicate a 27.5" rim, even though the rim tape says 27 x 20. I s...

Re: Can't Get #@!!@ Tire On Rim

The new rim with hubmotor came with no tire or tube - just rim tape. I'll get out the magnifying class and post what's on the sidewall of the new tire a bit later. I'll also try to read what's on the tires on the bike. As I wrote, though, this is, as best I can tell, the same tire model the bike alr...

Can't Get #@!!@ Tire On Rim

I just LOVE looking like a complete Newb. I really should stop buying things from Ebay, but anyway, here is the situation: I bought a 500 watt Das Kit 26" conversion kit on Ebay recently, so I could use the motor/wheel as a plug-in replacement for the really noisy Das Kit 500 watt 26" motor/wheel on...

Re: What companies make the best / fastest electric mountain bikes?

Agreed on the legal restrictions making most commercial bikes 28MPH - and many of them are more like 23-24 actual MPH. The NCM Moscow and Moscow plus are inexpensive mountain bike versions of my overpriced Magnum Metro street bike. (Actual top speed about 23MPH unless you have superhuman legs.)They ...

I tried broccoli sprouts when I was much younger. They tasted like burned rubber. If I were to grow sprouts to eat they would NOT be broccoli.

Re: 19" Motorcycle Wheels vs 26" Bicycle Wheels (rim and tires)

Are there any tougher-wearing more puncture resistant tires that would fit either variant but still have something approaching the "floating fattie" suspension effect? See my post above. They come in smaller sizes from other vendors, IIRC. Kevlar or nylon belts, rated for 30MPH sustained, but very ...

I have a 6 year old Ping Pack, hand-made by Mr. Ping, and a 5 year old Ping Pack, made after he sold the business but still worked there. The older pack is in amazing shape - almost like new - and the younger, five year old pack is in about the shape you'd expect a three year old pack to be. No comp...

I'm assuming that you've ridden a recumbent? Before you commit to one, take a long spin on a borrowed bike, and make sure that you're ok with your head being at SUV hubcap height.

Re: E bike milage

If you do use a hub motor, it has to be geared. A direct drive hub might be able to brute force its way up a big, steep hill, but it would use a huge amount of power doing it - and good luck if you have to stop halfway up and then start up again. But yes, a mid-drive motor that can use the bike's ge...

Re: E bike milage

Don't dismiss pedaling as something that "real" E-bikers don't do. Nice and easy but more or less constant pedaling can extend your range by a lot - like 50%. You also don't need all that wattage being sucked by the motor if you just want a nice, brisk ride and the ability to climb hills fast, with...

Re: Gen 1 Nissan LEAF Battery Modules Tested 40Ah

Keep in mind that there was a change in battery chemistry for the Leaf modules in April of 2013. Modules from before 4/2013 will degrade much more quickly - especially in even moderate heat. Modules from 4/2013 through 2014 are much better. The best ones will be from the 24kwh 2015 - 2016 "Lizard pa...
