Re: 48v lto design

I don't understand why you'd consider LTO for an ebike battery. If you want a boring, safe chemistry that's more energy dense than LTO by a good margin, use LiFePO4. LTO is useful if you care about getting tens of thousands of cycles while, by any other chemistry's metrics, abusing the battery horri...

Re: I bought a used Chevy Volt - and you probably should too!

The Hyundai Ionic (very efficient even in Winter), the VW eGolf, and in the 150 mile range, the 40kwh Leaf and one or two others that I forget at the moment. Those aren't generally available on the used market, are they? I haven't really seen, well, any of those used. That is very debateable , depe...

Re: I bought a used Chevy Volt - and you probably should too!

I believe diesel has gotten a bad rap. The main issues have been a result of the RPM's speeding up and slowing down, leading to occasional lean and rich conditions. In the lean mode (which is what got VW in trouble), the engine is getting fantastic mileage, but the unburned oxygen is heated enough ...

Re: I bought a used Chevy Volt - and you probably should too!

I am a huge fan of the Volt, and I was deeply disappointed when it was discontinued. My ideal configuration is a Chevy Volt, where the backup engine is a series-hybrid bio-diesel. Either GM wasn't able to make money on it, or they couldn't sell it - one of the two. I suspect the second more than th...

Re: I bought a used Chevy Volt - and you probably should too!

Thanks for the info on the Prius option - I didn't mention it except in passing because it didn't really match our driving needs (20-30 mile round trips into town, infrequent highway trips). ...so well that it will still get 55+ MPG with the EV range exhausted. This is down from the charge-assisted ...

Re: I bought a used Chevy Volt - and you probably should too!

If there was a Volt in town not a Leaf then I would be a Volt owner or is it Bolt? The Bolt is Chevy's long range pure electric. The Volt is Chevy's plug in hybrid with a gas engine. Whoever thought that was cute should be stuck explaining it to everyone, because it hasn't done anyone any favors.

No no no buy a Used leaf! Donate me one and I'll mess with it! :p just kidding, last year went EV shopping and there was only one EV car in town and bought it. I had other options to have some shipped in. The strangest thing was sales persons trying to talk me out of buying it. once you have one an...

I bought a used Chevy Volt - and you probably should too!

Shamelessly copied from my blog: https://syonyk.blogspot.com/2019/07/i-bought-used-chevy-volt-and-you-should-too.html I give myself permission to use my work in this way. ;) For those who don't live in a place where a short range BEV is a valid option - consider a used Volt! It can do everything, th...

Re: Lithium Batteries Shipping Rules Discussions

In 2019, the shipping label requirements changed for batteries. I found a remarkably good interactive guide to the labeling requirements: https://hazmateam.com/uploads/2019LITHIUMBATTERYSHIPPINGGUIDEINTERACTIVEMARCH182019.pdf But if you've got old labels, they're not good for much anymore - you can'...

Re: Have you seen negative voltage on cells?

It's not an urban legend. I've seen it multiple times on old, dead packs. I've see -2.69V on one cell group. https://syonyk.blogspot.com/2016/11/trek-transport-battery-teardown-with.html If one cell group is weak compared to the rest, it'll have lower capacity. Say, 900mAh vs 1500mAh or something. A...

Re: The end of BionX?

Nethers Wholesale is definitely a good source. I'm another, though I'm trying to ramp down my time spent building batteries so I can focus on other projects. The 37V and 26V packs are rock solid. I know of a few BMS failures on them, but they're very, very rare. The Trek Ride+ packs (11S) have a wea...

Re: Why not to try revive abused cells!

Yup. I won't touch anything below about 2V, and that's only if I know exactly how it got there and how long it's been there. Below 2.5V with unknown history, nope. And LVC on most of my stuff is 3.0V.

Re: BionX battery mounting rail?

BionX is out of business in the US, and somewhat unknown status in the EU. You're not going to find a rail cheap at this point.

Sell the pack to someone who is desperately looking for it, and buy something else decent. You'll come out ahead.

Re: The end of BionX?

For me this is also a BionX issue because I can not afford another four grand to replace my bike. BionX, from the perspective of the United States, is dead and gone. Period. You get what you get out of your batteries and the rest of the system, and when they die, if you can't get still working part...

Re: The end of BionX?

Watch out on the 11S Trek BMS boards. I've seen quite a few of those dead, which I can't say of the 10S boards. Self balancing does not exist. Put an empty and a full LMO cell in series and watch... Noting will happen. Can't be easier. Put a LiMn at 4.10V and 4.20V in series, then cycle them a few t...

Re: The end of BionX?

The Konion thread has an awful lot of observations about how this particular chemistry self balances, so check over there for details. I can say that the BionX packs with the LiMn cells, after years of service, have cell groups within 0.01V of each other, so whatever they were doing, works. Spinel L...

Re: The end of BionX?

(edit: originally both bikes had 11s 40,7V batteries from 2010 without single cell voltage monitoring. Those old 11s battery boards have been perfectly fine) The spinel LiMn cells ("Konion") will balance properly without a balancer. That is not true of other, more modern lithium chemistries, and yo...

Re: The end of BionX?

Hm? My first rebuild was the iZip Ultra. I've done plenty of LiMn BionX repair since then, but they have a solid BMS (with the exception of the 11S units - those seem to kill BMS boards). The 48V units are something totally different, and are unreliable as hell. The BMS blows up and then drains the ...

Re: Best practices in voltage before stringing cells

If you've ordered new cells from a vendor, they should all be at the same (+/- 0.01V) shipping voltage - usually sub-3.7V. I normally see around 3.60-3.64V on the stuff I order, depending on the particular variety of cells. If they're all over the place, they're probably not new, OEM cells, so compl...

Re: Bionx 48V SL 350 XL battery charging issue

Any idea why they're doing the 26V charger with boost circuit instead of just having a proper charger output? Is there some limit at 50V that they can't exceed for end user equipment?

And the 48V BMS boards are just crap anyway. If they're not frying one thing, they're frying another.

A member of the German Pedelecforum posted this "emergency solution" if you do not have a BionX battery. If you do that the console takes longer to react, you lose the battery gauge and the clock. sadly also recuperation will not work. Maybe deactivating code 3774 (overvolt protection) could help? ...
