The Earth is becoming Planet of the Humans. People and our livestock now outweigh wild land mammals 50:1 . "The current rate of extinction of species is estimated at 100 to 1,000 times higher than natural background rates. also, the current rate of extinction is 10 to 100 times higher than in any of...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

First graph is a bit older but i'll take it. Last one is a projection. Got better data? One interesting thing of note is that we had a global huge dip in all sorts of energy usage.. one would think this would lead to reduced co2 output and less warming.. but it just didn't.. Here's one from the EIA...

"Our findings show that the annual average CO2 concentrations will still increase through this year, even though emissions are reducing. Across the whole year, we estimate CO2 levels will rise by 2.48 parts per million (ppm). This increase is 0.32ppm smaller than if there had been no lockdown – equi...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

But a carbon tax is just a money grab on based on a theoretical benefit IE they are expecting you to “believe” in the returns. You need to read the proposal of H.R. 763, It is designed to give back all of the fees as dividends to every tax payer so that only above average consumption will equate to...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

It's not supposed to work that way with increased profit margins all along the way. The intent is that this Carbon tax plan would be revenue neutral to the middle class and down while spurring the market forces to allow a replacement of Carbon energy by increasing it's cost. As it also forces effici...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Hard to predict. Political will seems to be to lower the electricity price and to give money for energyefficiency improvements in buildings and maybe some money for electric and hydrogen charging infrastructure. We will see what happens, lowering the EEG tarrifs für example is not so easy to do wit...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

For heating and small enterprises CO2 prices of 25€/t will be added to fossil fuels starting in 2021 and thos prices will grow to 55€/t in 2025. This will have an impact to shift heating from oil+gas to heat pumps. Do the revenues from Carbon taxes enter into a general tax fund or are they earmarke...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

A typical car today uses 80kWh of fuel for driving 100km. An electric car will use 20kWh for the same distance. An electric bike will use 1kWh for the same distance. A typical (not new) house today needs 20.000kWh for heating. A new efficient house needs 2.000kWh for heating. So in addition to repl...

I think your assumption that a fixed amount of raw energy (not useful energy, raw energy) is required to maintain a civilization is incorrect. We will certainly have a DIFFERENT civilization with a 75% reduction in available raw energy. That does not mean no civilization. The future won't be Star T...

Scale - we decide the scale, so it's up to us to determine on what scale they will be utilized. Our scale of built out solar and wind is up to our remaining liquid fuel and non-renewable resources and capital, based on the spare societal surplus that we can afford to put in to it that is not requir...

A way to store that energy, even if it's only 30% efficient, would be a good match. (Car engines are typically around 20% efficient and they're considered pretty useful.) But we didn't have to generate the energy in liquid fuel. Only to harvest it. Which until 2000 resulted ER/EI of 100 with a hist...

Round trip Hydrogen economies are very inefficient. Circa 30%. Much better to just use the available electricity when it is there. That whole report makes no mention where or how all of this extra electricity to turn into Hydrogen will be produced.
